Feasibility Studies – Water, Wastewater, Solid Waste
Corrientes Province, Argentina

This largely rural and poor area of Argentina has substandard infrastructure for water supply, wastewater treatment, and solid and hazardous waste management. The provincial government needed a sustainable and affordable plan to eliminate current public health problems caused by the inadequate infrastructure.

A turn-key plan had to be communicated effectively in Spanish to decision makers, politicians, and the public.

The Johnson Company performed two separate feasibility studies: water and wastewater, and solid and hazardous waste. The project was funded by a grant to the province from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency.  The project team toured the region, meeting with provincial and municipal officials and residents in 31 communities to discuss existing issues and concerns, and to observe existing facilities and operations.

Water and wastewater
The study team evaluated the existing infrastructure and assessed community needs. The team completed population projections, and water demand and wastewater generation estimates for the project's 20-year planning period. We developed design criteria to achieve the goals of safer drinking water and more effective wastewater treatment and disposal for all of its urban population. We conducted a thorough technology search and recommended affordable, alternative technologies that meet the goals.

The Johnson Company developed construction and treatment equipment cost estimates for the recommended infrastructure improvements, along with a rate analysis and projection model and a ranking and phasing evaluation for the recommended capital improvement projects.
